A webinar was organized on “Shallow Aquifer Management” on 12th December 2022 for the RCA cities officials to share the experience of Gwalior city’s experience of restoring its shallow aquifers. The city has over 3,000 open wells, which have been documented and geo-tagged. Based on this, a groundwater contour map has been prepared. The city is now able to identify potential groundwater recharge zones to revive depleting groundwater levels, and improve the water security of the city, which also helped in increasing the base flow in the Swarnrekha River. The talk was delivered by Mr Shishir Srivastava, who is leading the way forward of restoring and revitalizing the city’s wells and tank systems. Around 20 participants joined the webinar. He shared the process that the city had followed for mapping these tank systems and how other alliance cities can learn from this and implement the same.
